Two training programmes for farmers on “Rainwater harvesting and water management in horticultural crops” were conducted at KVK Conference Hall Yisemyong, Mokokchung on April 19 and 20. The training programme was sponsored by North Eastern Regional Institute of Land and Water Management (NERIWALM) Tezpur, Assam in collaboration with KVK Mokokchung Nagaland.
A press release by KVK Mokokchung stated that farmers were trained on various aspects of rain water harvesting as well as various irrigation practices for efficient water management. NERIWALM associate professor (Agriculture), Dr. B C Nath spoke on rain water harvesting, concept of horticultural based multiple cropping and critical stages of crop growth for water management.
The farmers were trained by NERIWALM assistant professor Water Resources Engineering, Dr. U M Hazarika on water management for horticultural crops, roof top and watershed level rain water harvesting. Rain water harvesting technology was demonstrated by SILPAULIN Guwahati, sr. sales officer, Somnath Poddar. Irrigation management for crop production- principles, planning and design and fertigation techniques and maintenance of micro-irrigation, was presented by Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd., Guwahati, sr. executive engineer, Er. Arunjyoti Sonowal.
At the inaugural function, District Agriculture Officer (DAO) Mokokchung, Nungsang Jamir expressed his gratitude to the resource persons and to NERIWALM for conducting such training and awareness programmes for farmers of Mokokchung district. He also encouraged the farmers to take advantage of the programme and to implement suitable techniques in their farming systems.
The programme was chaired by ACTO (Agri), Samuel, welcome address was delivered by E. Renbomo Ngullie, a key note address by NERIWALM associate professor (Agri), Dr. B C Nath, while the vote of thanks was proposed by ACTO (Plant Breeding and Genetics), Bendangjungla.
Farmers from the villages of Mopungchuket, Sungratsu, Yimchalu, Yisemyong and Aliba attended the training and awareness programme. Altogether 60 farmers participated in the two programmes.
