Woman reservation hearing delayed

Final hearing on the Nagaland Municipal election matter listed as item no 19 ,could not take place as court hearing on Tuesday could only take up item no 3. The remaining listed items including the Special Leave Petition (SLP) by the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JAWCR) will be heard before the same bench of judges next Tuesday. The petitioners with their Advocates incoluding the State Government counsels were present throughout the day in the Supreme Court No 12. It may be recalled, that the JACWR spearheaded by the Naga Mother’s Association (NMA) represented by its advisor Rosemary Dzuvichu and NMA president Abieu Meru. JACWR is appealing for a vacation of the July 31,2012 order of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench which set aside the ruling of the single bench judge which directed the state to hold town and municipal council polls by implementing the 33% reservation for women. The July 31,2012 court order had effectively put on hold the town and municipal council polls which were due after expiry of their terms in March 2010. The state government put on hold the civic polls on due to strong opposition from various tribal hohos and also apprehension of serious law and order problems. The state counsel, in the hearing had cited the situation that developed when the authorities tried to hold elections in one of the 19 councils (Mokokchung Council) on May 7, 2011 and which had to be ultimately called off.
