
Poumai Thounii (festival of New Year or festival of dawn) was celebrated, Tuesday, under the theme “our culture is our identity” at Senapati public ground wherein speakers emphasised on the importance of fostering unity and peace amongst the communities.
Speaking at the festival as chief guest, parliamentary secretary higher and technical education Nagaland Deo Nukhu stressed on the importance of remaining united and maintaining peace amongst the communities for a progressive future.
He also highlighted on the need to revive the good practices of “our” forefathers saying “our culture is our identity” and that one should not lost “our” rich culture in this modern age.
Nukhu also encouraged the people to promote one’s mother tongue saying one should not hesitate to communicate in their own mother tongue while outside their own land.
In his address as guest of honour, BJP National vice president ST Morcha Ramesh Meena said the “unique culture” of Poumai community should a bridge to strengthen the tribe, Nagas and India as a whole.
He also informed that the government of India was seriously working for the development of northeast. Ramesh Meena also sought the support of the people for August 3, 2015 Naga Peace Accord.
Naga Hoho vice president Samsong Raimai in his address urged the gathering to preserve their culture saying they would lose their identity if they lose their culture.
He also informed that Naga Hoho has decided to welcome Naga Peace Accord. Manipur MLA Dr. V. Alexander Pao also encouraged the gathering to emulate “our” forefathers who were hardworking and honest.
He also urged all the communities to set good example for their neighbours and work together for unity.
The inaugural session was led by Johnson Raih, Koide village council welcomed the gathering, invocation by Rev. Fr. Simon Thaikho, welcome address by Akha Dani president PNU, special songs were presented by Life pages, Mt. Everest College students and Lao Radiant Higher Secondary School, cultural dance by Laii dance troupe, vote of thanks by Ashipri Zho and benediction by Rev. H. Gideon.
Earlier, the chief guest unveiled the monolith of the festival, released the souvenir and inaugurated cultural fair followed by inspection of 24 villages exhibition and demonstration of Poumai indigenous products.
Around 15,000 people attended the celebration which included host of dignitaries, former ministers, MLAs, social workers, public leaders of various organizations and well-wishers.
