Nagaland police under the aegis of National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi organized 11th Nagaland police state level debate competition on human rights issues, Friday at Rhododendron hall, police complex, Chumukedima under the topic “awareness of human rights and social justice is lacking in Naga society”.
Delivering keynote address, IGP NAP Nagaland, Bendang Lemtur said that “art of debate must be understood and every point needed a rebuttal”. He said that a sincere effort has to be made to uplift the quality of debate, which could be uplifted only when one was conversant with the topic with proper and patient homework.
He encouraged the debaters to be personally involved in the debate so that it portrayed a truthful message. Basing on the theme, Lemtur said that human rights imply equality to any individuals or departments etc.
He further expressed hope that the aspects of fundamental rights, irrespective of anything would be highlighted by the participants and believed that the exercise would be fruitful so that the message could be disseminated to all ranks and files of the enforcing agencies in Nagaland. The penal of juries were DIG (NAP) Kohima, Z.Mero IPS, legal officer cum standing counsel, PHQ, O. Zuboni Ezung and SDO (Sadar) Dimapur, Moa Sangtam NCS.
The debate session was chaired by DIG (INT/CID) Nagaland, Richard Yimto, IPS while vote of thanks was delivered by S.P (SCRB) PHQ, Sejongmong Sangtam, NPS. The participants debated for the motion and against the motion and each participant was given five minutes each.
The winners are: first position was bagged by UBSI Athuibo Zeliang of C.P. Dimapur, second by UBSI Chopika Y.Sumi of C.P Dimapur and third position was shared by Nzanbemo of DEF Mon and UBSI Suthem Khim of C.P Dimapur.
In a jury remark, chairman, K. Mero stressed on the need of awareness of human rights especially by the law enforcing agencies as by nature of their responsibilities they are more likely to encounter human rights violations while discharging their duties.
He also said that human rights deals with protection of personal/individual freedom as well as safeguarding of natural freedom and social justice was protection of the society against violations of those freedoms and privileges.
