Irate youth reportedly from Khakhati and surrounding areas like Lahorijan, Soraijan and Bokajan on Wednesday afternoon shutdown the Motor Vehicle check post alleging that the check gate was setup without procuring no objection certificate from the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council (KAADC).
The youth numbering around 500 broke down the gates of the MV check post.
One of the youth told this Reporter that the truckers passing through this area were being imposed unwarranted taxation and that some trucks get stranded for more than ten days at a stretch.
They further alleged that the goods laden trucks were forcefully made to undergo weighing at an unauthorized weighing bridge set-up by one Pragati weighing bridge. Sources said that hundreds of youth appeared at the venue soon after more than 300 goods laden trucks imposed a “Chaka Jam” in front of the check gate, to protest against the unethical hardship they had to go through to get their goods delivered.
Those stationed at the check gate fled the scene sensing trouble after the youth shutdown the office. Prior to the shutdown, sources said that the area was heavily fortified with roadblocks, stop signs and uninformed personnel with traffic control reflective torches reportedly forcing trucks to undergo weighing at the pragati weigh bridge.
Meanwhile, personnel from Khatkhati police station rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Till late at night, security personnel were seen at the vicinity to prevent any untoward incident.
