Continuing with its phase-wise development, a road repaired by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) was opened by DC Dimapur, Wezope Kenye Monday at Old Over Bridge Colony making this the third major repaired road by the council within a span of two months.
With state government allowing DMC to collect toll tax for three months, on trial basis, the council has been utilizing some of the money to repair roads and clear drainages in and around Dimapur.
In his address, DMC administrator H Atokhe Aye said it was a privilege and challenge for DMC to bring about developments within Dimapur.
In keeping with the promise that it (DMC) would do its best to develop Dimapur, if given the chance to collect toll tax, Aye said within two months the council had managed to inaugurate three roads and has cleared drainages amongst “many” other ongoing projects. He also said DMC was according priority to development to bring progress through transparency and accountability.
Aye admitted that sanitation was a primary duty of DMC and which it would try its best to clear all the blocked drainages before monsoon for which major works have already begun.
He however lamented the lack of civic sense in public, who he said have started throwing garbage in the drainages being cleared by DMC workers. Atokhe tasked the public to throw garbage in the allotted areas while pointing out that garbage throwing sites are being constructed in some of the colonies.
He regretted that some households in the town had no septic tank and disposed off human excreta in the drains.
Aye said the council has taken note of such households and buildings and will shortly take action. Atokhe while urging public to inculcate civic sense asked them to cooperate with the council to make Dimapur a cleaner and developed city.
He also expressed gratitude to chief minister T. R. Zeliang for taking personal interest for the welfare and development of Dimapur and allowing DMC to collect toll tax for three months i.e. (January -March).
Speaking at the inaugural programme, DC Kenye lauded DMC headed by its administrator for bringing development in Dimapur within a short span of time.
He also asked the public to pray for the administrator and his team so that they could bring more developments.
Lauding the residents of Old over Bridge Colony and colony council for their cooperation, pointed out the lack of drainage in either side of the newly repaired road.
Kenye said that it was now up to the residents to decide whether to allot a small portion of land to construct the drainage cautioning that if it was not done the road would not last long.
Kenye while urging the public to extend cooperation to DMC in maintaining the already repaired roads and drainages said that it was now upon the public to look after the road and drainages and ensure proper maintenance.
The inaugural programme was attended by residents of the colony, colony leaders, DMC members, officials from Dimapur administration.
It may be noted that the ongoing developmental works are being implemented by the money collected through DMC toll tax for the month of January and February wherein 40% was used for salaries and office maintenance and 60% for developmental works.
So far DMC has inaugurated Murgi Patti Road connecting Nyamo Lotha Road, GS Road and MP Road, Old Masjid Road/ Hazi Park Road that connects Railway Road and Old over Bridge Colony Road. The council has also started clearing drainages at several vital points of the town and is also constructing garbage throwing sites amongst other projects.
