To sensitise farmers about the importance of scientific breeding management and artificial insemination of pigs, Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Regional Council, Nagaland Centre, Jharnapani, in collaboration with NABARD and NEPED-NRTT, Nagaland, has organised a training programme from February 3 to 5. ICAR has been promoting pig breeding through artificial insemination with the aim of fullfiling the demand of superior germplasm at farmers’ door steps. Twenty participants from Kohima, Dimapur, Wokha and Mokokchung districts have participated in the training programme.
Dr. Vilatuo Rhutsa, Co-ordinator NEPED; V Chelludurai, General Manager NABARD regional office, Dimapur; and Dr. Bidyut C Deka, Joint Director of ICAR – Nagaland Centre; and officials from NEPED and state cooperative bank graced the inauguration at the valedictory session of the training program.
During the three day programme, deliberation on different aspects of scientific pig breeding, feeding management, health care and artificial insemination of pig were carried out by a team of experts from ICAR and NEPED lead by Dr. MK Patra, Scientist (Animal Reproduction).
Dr. Bidyut C Deka, Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre, has appreciated the efforts taken up by NABARD and NEPED for promoting pig breeding at farmers’ field and assured that the ICAR Nagaland Centre would extend full technical support for implementing artificial insemination in all the districts of Nagaland. He further urged all the participants to engage themselves with financial institution for small scale saving generated out of pig husbandry.
Dr. Vilatuo Rhutsa has expressed gratitude to ICAR for rendering training to the beneficiaries of NEPED.
During interaction with the participants, Chelludurai informed about different livelihood schemes and projects being implemented by NABARD and also motivated the farmers to take up livestock farming, particularly piggery as an entrepreneurship. All the participants were provided with a certificate at the valedictory programme.
