Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya and chief minister T.R. Zeliang have condoled death of R.K. Laxman, a renowned Indian cartoonist, illustrator and a humorist, who passed away in Pune. In his message through the OSD, Acharya said that his “common man”, created in 1957 was the symbol of India’s ordinary people, their trials and tribulations, their little joys and sorrows. Governor said all his cartoons depicted ordinary Indian citizen’s reaction to the political situation.
“He always believes that nothing is more sacrosanct than freedom of expression. He spoke the language of the common man through his cartoons”, Acharya added.
In another statement issued through the principal secy., chief minister, T.R. Zelaing conveyed deep condolences to the family members and well wishers of R.K. Laxman. Zeliang said through his iconic cartoons, he was able to portray the idiosyncrasies of politics, bringing smiles to millions across India including Nagaland.
Regarded as the greatest cartoonists and the ‘conscience keeper’ of the country for over five decades, Zeliang said it was ironic that a man who was in his own way, a perceptive recorder died on Republic Day. Further, Zeliang prayed that his soul rests in eternal peace.
