Imsongunger Clan platinum jubilee underway

The platinum jubilee celebration of the Imsongunger Clan begun on January 20 at the Community Hall, Chuchuyimpang village, with editor of Tir Yimyim, K Temjen Jamir as the guest speaker.
Speaking on the topic ‘Challenges in documenting oral tradition,’ K Temjen said oral tradition was the only means to transmit knowledge from one generation to another since the forefathers did not have a script. He said the present day requires documentation in book form but added that the preservation of the oral tradition is equally important to maintain the close fabric of the community.
He pointed out that one of the greatest folly of the present generation was that they have forgotten to listen to parents which were passed down by their parents.
K Temjen shared a few precautions in regard to the challenges faced in documenting the orally transmitted tradition and culture. He said writing without proper research work could lead to misunderstandings and discords. He opined that one should get the approval from all the characters involved in the book prior to publication.
Secondly, he said writers should focus on facts whether of positive or negative aspects. Thirdly, he appealed the people from resorting to punitive actions against writers but to take corrective measures instead. K Temjen suggested that the Ao Senden should bring about a positive solution in this regard. He said social reformation and change is the need of the hour.
K Temjen said researchers should be encouraged to do research and document the histories of the Aos beyond Longterok and to Eden.
Earlier, Sashikala, Associate Prof, Department of Education, Fazl Ali College, spoke on behalf of the Imsongunger womenfolk while and short speeches were delivered by LP Namo, general secretary of Mongsen Mungdang, and Putusowa Jamir of Longmisa village.
