Naga girl among 24 young brave hearts for ‘Bravery Awards 2014’

Mhonbeni L. Ezung, a 9 year-old girl from Wokha, who saved the life of her grandmother in 2014, is among the twenty four children — 8 girls and 16 boys, who have been selected for the National Bravery Awards for the year 2014.
Talking to this Correspondent, N. Longtsubemo Lotha, a proud father of Mhonbeni, said they were in Delhi to receive the award from Prime Minister. Longtsubemo, who is a havaldar in the Home Guards, thanked Nagaland Post for highlighting her daughter’s feat in the newspaper.
The report ‘Brave girl saves grandma in Wokha’ was published in Nagaland Post on August 10, 2014.
The incident happened on January 28, 2014 when Mhonbeni, then 8-year old, had gone to her maternal grandmother’s home in Chudi village. As she was there to spend her winter break, her grandmother, Renthunglo Jungi, then 78-year-old, wife of late Limomo Jungi, had taken her out for fishing to Anunga Hayi stream, some 4-5 kms from Chudi village.
While fishing the grandmother suffered sudden cramp, followed by a stroke and fell unconscious. Sensing trouble, Mhonbeni ran back 4-5 km of thick forests all alone to the village to call for help. The grandmother was rushed to Sanis PHC and referred to Dimapur later. She survived the stroke. The selection was made by a high powered committee comprising representatives of various Ministries/Departments, non-governmental organisations as well as office bearers of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).
The children will receive their Awards from the Prime Minister on January 24, at a special function and will participate in the Republic Day parade.
The awardees receive a medal, certificate and cash. Eligible awardees will be granted financial assistance until completion of schooling. Some State Governments also provide financial assistance to them.
In addition, ICCW provides financial assistance under its Indira Gandhi Scholarship Scheme to those undertaking professional courses– engineering and medicine. For others, assistance is provided till they complete their graduation. Some seats are also reserved for awardees in medical and engineering colleges and polytechnics.
Meanwhile, PIB defence wing in a press release informed that a Gala event was organized at ICCW (Indian council for child welfare) on Saturday to honour the children.
