CPO organises maiden Chakhesang Day

The first Chakhesang Day organised by Chakhesang People’s Organisation (CPO) was celebrated on January 10, at Phek village local ground.
Speaking at the occasion, Rev. P Bonny Resu, general secretary of Asia Pacific Baptist Federation, reminded the gathering that Chakhesang people in the past were known for their honesty and that people saw them as hard working, honest and more united. He urged upon all Chakhesang people to iron out there misunderstandings or differences and work towards common interest.
Rev Bonny further reminded the gathering that Chakhesang Day was celebrated keeping in mind the need to take pride of being a Chakhesang and to show solidarity to the rest of the Nagas the oneness of the tribe.
Pointing out the fact that the tribe still lacks behind in education, he sought the cooperation from all quarters to ensure that quality education is made available at all village government run institutions.
‘Poor economy of parents does not permit our children to reach out to private schools, but our government run schools have qualified teachers and if they are dedicated, they can provide quality education,’ he stated.
Rev. also impressed on the Chakhesang people to learn to be self reliant by undergoing necessary trainings and do away with dependency on leaders. He said that there was pressing need for leaders to bring more development and expressed confidence that it would be possible if the people were willing to let go of their dependency mindset.
Rev Bonny also called on the educated to carry out researches on the values and practices of the forefathers and document the same for the younger generation. This, he said, was imperative with the depleting number of old people among the community.
Meanwhile, the CPO during its 33rd general session resolved to celebrate ‘Chakhesang Day’ on January 10 every year. It has resolved to observe combined programme once in three years.
CPO also resolved to bring out a booklet on the formation of Chakhesang tribe. CPO has further resolved to continue ban on import of pork to Chakhesang inhabited areas. However, for rearing purposes, piglets weighing below 30 kgs could be imported from outside but has to be ascertained by the respective local youth organization.
It has further reiterated its resolution to ban hunting, jungle burning and extraction of flora and fauna. CPO has also resolved to organize Chakhesang cultural day with an aim to preserve, protect and nurture the rich cultural heritage. 
Thousands of people representing different villages under Phek district attended the celebration. 
‘Chakhesang Day’ was celebrated in remembrance of the pioneers who have initiated the move to curve out separate tribe under the aegis ‘Chakhesang.’ Various village leaders who participated in the fest agreed to uphold the pledged initiated by CPO president, Sovenyi, to strengthen and uphold the visionary commitments of the tribe elders.
