A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was recovered from inside an ATM booth in Mokokchung town Friday. According to official sources, the IED was reportedly found by a CRPF jawan who had gone to the ATM to draw cash Friday around 8.30 a.m. The IED was wrapped inside a packet.
31 Assam Rifles along with bomb-squad, police and district administration rushed to the spot and cordoned the area. The IED was later removed and disposed off in the presence of the district administration and police around 3 p.m. without any damage to properties. Investigation was on to ascertain the motive behind the incident and those involved. CCTV records and other possible evidences were being collected from the ATM booth to aid in the investigations.
Orgns condemn
Ao Senden, Ao Student Conference (AKM) and Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) have condemned the planting of a suspected IED at an ATM booth on Friday.
Ao Senden: Terming act of leaving an IED at the ATM booth as “act of senseless human”, Ao Senden president Dr. Sangyu Yaden said it was hard to overcome the “threat and fear psychosis” caused by the act. Ao Senden also acknowledged the timely action of district administration, police and 31 AR.
AKM: Ao Student Conference (AKM) said it was provoked on hearing that the people of Mokokchung had a “hard time” on hearing the news of a bomb that was hidden near an ATM booth at Mokokchung. Condemning the “act of terror”, AKM president L. Jemti Longchar and general secretary Bendangkumba Aier asked the law enforcing agencies to probe the incident and to book the culprit(s). AKM acknowledged timely action of the district administration, police and 31 AR.
MCCI: Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) said it was disturbed to hear rhe news of an IED being placed at an ATM booth by unknown miscreants. MCCI president Moasangba Jamir said even though the IED “was not fatal”, it instilled fear in the minds of the people of the town.
Appreciating the preparedness and timely intervention of 31 AR bomb squad and police, MCCI said this was a wake-up call for banks in Mokokchung that there was a need for security in their respective ATM booths. MCCI said almost all the ATM booths in the town remained open without adequate security or any caretaker.
