Nagaland Forest Department organized a seminar-&-workshop for human-animal conflict mitigation and nature conservation for community and schools of Tamlu in Longleng on July 30.
A press release by PCCF (Wildlife) & chief wildlife warden (CWW), Nagaland, Satya Prakash Tripathi stated that during the keynote address, the CWW gave a presentation on “the importance of forest and wildlife”. He also spoke about the community reserves notified in Longleng and highlighted the policies of the state government and the MoEF & CC, GoI, New Delhi for addressing the problem. He appealed to the community to protect forests and wildlife and declare their forest a community reserve. He also asked them to contact forest officials immediately in case of damage to their crop/properties/human life.
Suman W M Sivachar, wildlife warden, Kiphire gave a presentation on “wildlife conservation in Nagaland”. The participants were made aware of various wild animals in Nagaland and about their behaviours.
Special guest, Y. Chingyak Konyak, ADC Tamlu requested the participants to learn more about community reserves and to be clear of its provisions, its pros and cons, and to discuss these things in detail at the village level so that the reserves, once notified, could become successful examples of conservation.
Beizo Suokhrie, DFO, Longleng emphasized on the importance of wildlife to the ecosystem.
Y Chingan Phom, president, Phom Peoples Council (PPC) appealed to the department to have a greater presence in the region by having a wildlife or a territorial range office at Sakshi and Tamlu.
Manvau Phom, VCC Tamlu appealed to the department, with an application, to consider the possibility of a community reserve.
Earlier, Nukshimatong, EAC Tamlu delivered the welcome address, where he highlighted how for the first time such a program was being conducted in Tamlu by the department. Invocation prayer by was delivered by N Mongmei, pastor of Tamlu Town Baptist Church in the program chaired by Ailong Phom, forest range officer, Longleng.
Benediction was offered by Rev. P. Peushing Phom, pastor Tamlu village Baptist Church and vote of thanks by Ailong Phom, forest range officer, Longleng. Around 150 persons including officials from Forest department, administration, chairmen/members/GBs/head GBs of Village Council of Tamlu village attended the program. The program was sponsored under the centrally sponsored scheme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, New Delhi.
