The Right To Information (RTI) Week was observed in Longleng with Imtiakum, SDPO Longleng on October 8 at the DC’s Conference Hall. A DIPR report stated that the program was held under the theme: “RTI and the Role of Citizens”.
In his keynote address, DC Longleng, John Tsulise Sangtam asserted that the purpose of observing the RTI week was to sensitize the citizens and officers on the importance of the RTI Act. While stating that the purpose of the RTI Act was to maintain transparency and accountability in the working system of the Government offices, John said the Act should not be used for personal profit or to target any officer individually. It, instead, should be used for public interest.
Speaking on the theme, the resource person asserted that under RTI no government office, even the President or PM’s office, is exempted. He said that the RTI Act is the only Indian Act which do not give immunity to the President or Prime Minister of India, overwrites any other law, does not respect any hierarchy, and it reminds the populace that the government is a servant of the people.
Earlier, a welcome address was proposed by the chairperson, Robi Sangtam, EAC Longleng, and a vote of thanks was proposed by D. Robin, SDO (C) Longleng. The highlights of the program were distribution of leaflets on RTI and screening of RTI short film on ‘My Rights: My Voice’.
