State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) organised a two day training program on “Post Harvest Management and Value Addition of Fruits and Vegetables” for ATMA functionaries at SAMETI, Medziphema on December 5 and 6.
A press release from director SAMETI Medziphema stated that resource persons for the training were scientist (Horticulture Vegetable Science) ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Abon W. Yanthan; assistant professor department of Horticulture, NU: SASRD Medziphema campus, Dr. A. Sarkar, and chief technical officer KVK Dimapur, V. Kenny Rhetso.
The training program covered topics on processing and value addition of fruits and vegetables, post harvest management of fresh fruits and vegetables, post harvest management and value addition of turmeric, ginger and king chilli, overview of processing and handling of high value fruit crops in Nagaland with reference to entrepreneurship development, value addition in fruits and vegetables. A practical session on pickle, squash and jam making was conducted by V. Kenny Rhetso. In her valedictory address, vice-principal IETC Medziphema, Dr. Watimongla Jamir, encouraged the participants to become true agriculturists by bringing about tangible changes in their respective districts as well as the state. She stressed on the importance of being practically efficient in the field so that positive results could be achieved both in letter and in spirit.
Post harvest management being one of the most important measures in preventing waste of surplus crop produce particularly during glut, the training was aimed at teaching ways and means to achieve these measures through value addition as well as proper post harvest management practices.
The valedictory function was chaired by DPD SAMETI, Vikaho Chophi, while feedback on the training was given by BTM Kiphire, Jess T. Murry and ATM Kohima, Keviravono Visa.
The training program saw a good turnout of participants from all districts of the state and concluded with distribution of certificates to participants by Dr. Watimongla Jamir, and vote of thanks pronounced by DPD SAMETI, Sentinaro Longchar.
