Unions hold general sessions and conferences

With the holiday season, various unions and other organizations have been holding their general conferences and sessions. Following are reports of some of them.

MTSSU annual general conference: Medziphema Town Sumi Student’s Union (MTSSU) held its 23rd annual general conference under the theme, “Inculcating progressive skills through knowledge and wisdom” on December 27 and 28, 2018 at Medziphema Town Sumi Baptist Church,

A press release issued by MTSSU stated that the special guest, G/T government of Nagaland, chairman youth executive WSBAK, Alfred H. Ayemi, emphasized on dignity of labour and how a job, irrespective of its position, should be acknowledged and appreciated. 

He urged students to enjoy responsibilities and to trust their skills so that they may enjoy their work as they earn. He also pointed out that that no work is too small and urged the students to never be ashamed to perform any kind of labour. 

Alfred encouraged the students leave their comfort zones and venture out.

The program was chaired by supervisor Sunday School MTSBC, Hukali Zhimo; invocation was pronounced by associate woman pastor MTSBC, Viheli Zhimo. The newly elected office bearers for the tenure 2019-2020 is headed by Bento Chishi as president and Tonato Rochill as general secretary.

Yorubami Students Union general session: The Yorubami Students Union (YSU) held its 63rd general session under the theme “Empowering excellence” at Yoruba Local Ground under Phek district on December 28 and 29.

A press release from YSU stated that the guest speaker for the inaugural session was Tecuno Vamuzo, Chief Judicial Magistrate Longleng, and Vezalhü Chakhesang, ex-president YSU & KCSU, was the session speaker. Dzüvichüno Banuo Veswüh, principal Royal Academy Higher Secondary School, Itanagar graced the valedictory function of the two day event.

Speaking on the occasion, the guest speaker talked about the importance of preserving identity and culture. She laid emphasis on dignity of labour and challenged students to take pride in earning through hard work. Vamuzo encouraged the student body to guide and teach the younger generation. She also recounted some of her own experiences when she was involved in student unions.

The program was attended by a host of dignitaries, Church leaders, elders, president CSU and his colleagues.

In the evening, Vezalhü shared a brief history of the origin of Nagas and also spoke on the importance of sanitation and cleanliness in the village.

A highlight of the second day was the literary day including students participating in various competitions (quiz, essay writing competition, extempore speech, debate, drawing and painting competition.) 

The program concluded with a valedictory session in the evening where meritorious students were felicitated.

WVGEU annual conference: Wokha Village Government Employees’ Union (WVGEU) conducted its 24th annual conference at the Wokha village community hall with Er. R.C. Murry, senior manager, E/M, DHEP as the theme speaker on December 28, 2018.

A press release from WVGEU president Yanrenthung Kikon and general secretary Hajamo Murry reported that speaking on the theme ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world,’ Er. Murry said that everybody desires to change the world but nobody ever thinks of changing the self. Elaborating further, he said that if the question of who wants change was put forward, everybody would say they want change. But if they are asked if they would change first, nobody wants to say “I will change myself first.” An individual has to first change oneself and only then can change happen in the community and world, Er. Murry added.

Earlier, WVGEU president Yanrenthung Kikon delivered a presidential address and EAC Englan, Echungbemo Erui, delivered greetings at the conference function led by Dr. Nchumbeni Humtsoe.

Wokha Village Baptist Church (WVBC) pastor O. Thungben Kikon offered a special prayer for government employees of Wokha village under Wokha district.

WVBC deacon Zurenthung Murry said the invocation; Y. Senka Murry from B Khel presented a special number; WVGEU auditor convenor Mhathung Kikon proposed a vote of thanks; and WVBC deacon Phyokhamo Murry pronounced the benediction.

The conference function was followed by a luncheon and a general discussion hour where reports, including from the general secretary, finance secretary and a lunch expenditure report was also presented.

The union expressed gratitude to all members and all concerned for making the 24th WVGEU annual conference a grand success.

LSU holds general session: Lakhuti Students’ Union (LSU) held its 68th general session on December 31 at Local Ground, Lakhuti Village, under the theme “Think, Execute and Win.”

A press release by media in charge, LSU, Yanrenthung J Humtsoe said that general manager, NST, Elhibemo Yanthan, was the special guest for the event. In his address, he advised the students to be cautious and to think ahead of every step. Citing the example of Nelson Mandela’s life, Humtsoe also motivated the students by sharing the hardships and humiliation Mandela encountered. 

Theme speaker, district fishery officer, Dory Yanthan, urged the students to realize their dreams and execute them with open hearts and accepting all circumstances. She also advised the students to hunger to achieve their dreams by believing in themselves and believing in change. 

Guest of honour for the event was retired assistant director, department of School Education, R. Daniel Yanthan, who in his speech laid emphasis on the importance of the pen. 

Short speeches were delivered by general secretary, Lotha Students Union, Ashanthung Humtsoem, and general secretary, Lotha Middle Range Students Union, William Yanthan, and vote of thanks delivered by general secretary LSU, Libeni Ngullie. 

Zarenthung Yanthan and Eyilobeni Kikon presented special numbers, and a welcome song was presented by executive members of LSU. 

Pastor, LBC, Rev. Ezanbemo Odyuo offered a special prayer for the students, and senior leader Seventh Day Adventist Church Lakhuti, Chonzamo Yanthan offered the invocation, followed by a welcome address by president LSU, Shanjamo Yanthan.  

The program was chaired by Nzani Ngullie and Vincent Kikon and benediction was delivered by women’s coordinator LSU, Soyingbeni Patton.
