War veteran Dazo Angami passes away

Former army man Dazo Angami (Sohuyi Sazo), a veteran of the Indo-Pakistan War, Ashok Chakra, Sangram, Poorvi Star and 25th Indian Independence Anniversary medal winner, passed away after a brief illness at his private residence, Rukizu in Pfutsero under Phek district on Wednesday.

He was 84 and is survived by one son, three daughters and a host of grandchildren.

The war veteran was born at Phusachodu village in 1934. His father late Murhachu died when he was still very young and was brought up as a foster child by his uncle late Pohu Sazo. The former Indian Army havildar joined Assam Police at the age of 14 as a constable at Dergaon, Assam on August 10, 1948. He later left Assam Police and went to Shillong where he was recruited into the Assam Regiment in 1958. He was first posted to the Sikkim Battalion and later transferred to 6th Battalion of Assam Regiment in 1962.

When the Indo-Pakistan war broke, Dazo was posted at the front bordering East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) from 1969 to 1972. He participated in the Indo-Pakistan war and was at the forefront in November-December 1971. During the war, he was posted at various places like Halley, Lalmati, lsordy, Sylhet, etc.

After actively serving the regiment, he retired from service in 1974 as a havildar. He was decorated with a number of medals for his proficiency in the service.
