
An interactive and awareness program on management and handling of wastes was conducted by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) at its Conference Hall, in Dimapur on February 28.
A press release from NPCB member secretary, Rusovil John stated that the program was organized to sensitize people on the rules of handling waste and how it could be managed most efficiently with least harm to the environment.
Rusovil John, in his welcome speech, highlighted the need for conducting interactive and awareness programs on handling and waste management to create a cleaner, better and healthier environment. He also informed the participants that collection centres and scrap dealers need to be registered with the NPCB. Rusovil went on to explain that entrepreneurs should maintain their collection centres appropriately and send different types of wastes to registered recyclers or refurbishers authorized by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Municipal councils were also requested to register collection centres and give the NPCB details of collection centres and scrap dealers in their respective districts.
Some important waste management rules were discussed and a slide-show presentation on solid waste management was presented by Khriehunuo Rutsa, IT Officer. Sentinaro, scientific assistant, in her presentation on plastic waste management, laid stress on the harmful effects of plastic waste and encouraged the use of alternatives. A presentation on e-waste management was shown by Olivi Chophy, scientific assistant. Grievances and problems faced by various municipal and town councils were also discussed during the program. A vote of thanks was delivered by Akangmeren Imchen, scientist B, NPCB. The program was attended by municipal councils, town councils and collection centres and scrap dealers.
