Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) equipped its dumpers and cesspool vehicles with Global Positioning System (GPS) vehicle tracking systems. This was launched on Friday by commissioner of police, Dimapur, Limasunep Jamir.
Limasunep Jamir, in his speech stated that tracking these vehicles was an innovative step to ensure better services for citizens. He added that this will make the run-time and location management of these government vehicles transparent and improve the service delivery mechanism.
Limasunep also dwelt on the importance of monitoring systems which allows man-power resources to be used effectively and helps bridge a gap between noticing and appreciating contributions and highlighting things that are being done wrong. He hoped that field officers and supervisors will ensure delivery of the right kind of services and be honest in their duties.
Speaking about the Police department, Limasunep maintained that the department also uses tracking systems which has proved to be productive. But at the same time, he said, any technology depends on aspects of sustainability, maintenance and connectively etc.
DMC administrator, Moa Sangtam, in his speech, said that the GPS tracking system was the first of its kind and has been initiated by the DMC alone. He admitted that the DMC was not in a position to track all of its 25 dumpers and cesspool vehicles every day, and this brought about the idea to create a system to check vehicles on duty. The tracking system, Moa claimed, was an in house design which has been launched to check staff and ensure that DMC services reach citizens.
According to the DMC administrator, the council has been trying to turn itself into a ‘Smart’ municipal council. Towards this end, it has also launched a website, online trade license payment services, and installed a biometric attendance system. The tracking system, he said, should help disseminate information to DMC staff through SMSs. He also stated that within a month or two, the DMC should be launching an online house-rent payment portal.
Moa appealed to citizens to make use of its online services because so far, citizens seem to be not using their online services which are a lot more convenient.
Computer programmer Sariyongba B Lkr, presented a slide-show presentation on the GPS tracking system, benefits of vehicle tracking and its key features. In the program, a dedicatory prayer was offered by DMC office superintendent, Kihovi Z Achumi.
