Nagaland University, Lumami conducted a farmers’ Seminar-&-Training program on the “Potentials of organic farming of spices for doubling farmers’ income” in I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, from March 29 to 30.
A press release from NU, Lumami, Zunheboto, PRO Peter Ki stated that chief guest of the program, professor Pardeshi Lal, vice-chancellor, Nagaland University, in his speech emphasized on the potential of spices grown in the area as a livelihood source for the farming community.
Altogether around 200 farmers from the eight villages of Lumami, Zaphumi, Alaphumi, Sema Settsii, Litta New, Phisumi, Izheto, and Ajiqami, participated in the program. Among other things, the training focused on marketing strategies of organic spices and organic cultivation of ginger and turmeric.
The inaugural program, held on March 29, was chaired by professor SK Chaturvedi, HoD, Botany, NU; a welcome address was delivered by Dr. Kundan, SMS (Agricultural Extension), KVK, NU; and a special speech was delivered by Dr. Abemo, registrar, NU.
At the valedictory program held on March 30, the chief guest, professor MK Sinha, finance officer, NU said that the government needed to be proactive in ensuring that organic products were transferred from the producer to the user to benefit the farming community.
The seminar & training program was organised by KVK, NU, and sponsored by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India.
