
Awareness programme on “plastic waste management” was held in Mon, Tseminyu and Medziphema on April 30.
Mon: In Mon, the day was observed at Mon Town council hall with deputy commissioner Mon, Thavaseelan K, as the special guest.
According to DIPR, the DC encouraged all the students and participants to look for alternate steps to reduce the use of plastics in Mon town. He also distributed prizes to the winners of essay competition on “plastic waste management” and plastic trash collection competition.
The winners of the essay competition were: Wanmei Walim Konyak, Sacred Heart School, Toilih M. Konyak, Police Unit School and Neha Kumari Ram, Model School respectively. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Ethel Konyak. Entertainment on plastic waste management was presented by Wangba Konyak and vote of thanks by ADC and administrator Mon Town Council, Hiazu Meru.
Tseminyu: Awareness campaign programme was held at Christian School Tseminyu. EAC Tsogin, Rozy Sangtam in her speech called upon the school children to share their ideas about plastic waste management to their parents at home.
EAC also encouraged them to follow three steps for a proper way of managing the waste plastics, such as, to refuse to use them, to minimise or reduce the use of plastics in our daily lives, or to preserve them for recycling purposes. In order to avoid using plastic bags, cloth carry bags were distributed to the students, teachers and officials present at the programme.
Rozy also reminded the gathering that distribution of cloth carry bags signify Tseminyu town becoming plastic free.
Students of BHSS Tseminyu, Njini Thong and others also spoke about plastic waste management at the programme. The programme was initiated and organised by Tseminyu town council under Swachh Bharat Mission.
Medziphema town: Awareness and community sensitisation programme on harmful effects on plastic use and one-day training on paper bag making organised by ATSI & Co in collaboration with Can Youth, sponsored by district administration media and IPR was held at public hall, Medziphema town.
According to DIPR report, Nino Krose an elderly person from Medziphema spoke on the topic “action for change”, where she also emphasized on the importance of plastic management. She quoted Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you want to see in this world” and added that as responsible citizens one should contribute towards a better world.
The resource person Jenpu Rongmei, chief functionary Can Youth while addressing the gathering, spoke about the purpose of the awareness campaign and highlighted the ecological and social effect of plastic pollution.
He also explained how to minimise the triggering threat of plastic pollution and urged the students, NGOs and all present in the programme to sensitise. He further said educational institution and Churches must encourage reducing plastic products in daily life.
Training on paper bag making was also imparted to women.
