ISRO launches young scientist programme ‘YUVIKA’

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a special programme for school children- Young Scientist Programme or Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA), in tune with the government’s vision “Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan”.

Under the programme, three students were selected from Nagaland- Kemesanuo Rio from Saint John’s High School, Diphupar- B, Abhimanyum P Deshmuk and Eyilobeni T Lotha from JNV, Chukitong. 

More than 100 students – three students from each state and union territories, participated in the programme. They were imparted training by ISRO scientist. 

Young Scientist Programme was primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space application to the young children with the intent of arousing their interest in the emerging areas of space activities. It also seeks to inculcate scientific temper in students.

The training programme was conducted by ISRO from May 13 to 25, 2019. During the two week course curriculum, the students were provided with course material which was already pre-loaded on their tablets. It included science topics like Rocket Engineering, Environment Science, Astronomy, Space Application, Renewable Energy and also soft skill improvement modules like leadership, team work, communication etc. The programme also covered invited talks and experience shared by the eminent scientists, facility and lab visits, hands on training, exclusive session with experts and a feedback session.

The residential training programme was held at four ISRO centres.

 The students from Nagaland along with some other states attended the programme at North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), Shillong. Later, students from all the states assembled at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota. The students also visited ISRO laboratories and interacted with eminent scientists. Various topics on space technology, science and application were taught and explained by renowned Scientist. Former director NESAC, KC Bhattacharya taught the students about the history of Indian Satellite, types and parts of a satellite. The talk on “Personality” by Dr. Cherla Raja Mouli further helped the students in developing their personality.

ISRO chairman, Dr K. Sivan gave away the medals to all the participants for representing their state. ISRO also provided a Tab, T-shirt and bag to all the young scientists.

Meanwhile, Headmaster, Johny Abraham on behalf of the students, teachers and parents expressed gratitude to Director of School Education for selecting Kemisanuo Rio for YUVIKA – 2019.
