Students of Model Christian College (MCC) were capacitated on “peer mediation” on June 19, with district coordinator, Peace Channel, Kohima, Alino S Chishi, as the resource person.
A press release from Peace Channel stated that Chishi expressed that peer mediation was one of the skills needed for peace builders in promoting sustainable peace in Nagaland. She spoke about conflicts that take place in one’s daily life, and therefore resolving problems or issues with right approach saved relationships and violence.
She said that peer mediation is a process by which two or more students involved in disputes meet in private, safe and confidential setting to work out problems with assistance of a trained mediator. She firmly stated that it was a platform for youths to share common space inclusively that allows building trust and unity.
She also highlighted benefits of peer mediation that allows individuals to enhance self confidence, capacity building to understand one’s own health, environment and other issues, building team spirit, effective leadership qualities and life skill development.
She further encouraged the need for ardent and committed leaders to solve conflicts in a matured responsible manner by enrolling themselves in peer mediation forum.
Principal, MCC, Dr. Luke Rymbai and managing director, MCC, S.P Francis, expressed cooperation towards youth participation in peace building and with their agreement, students will file themselves as members of peer mediation forum.
