
Unity College Dimapur (UCD) celebrated its annual cultural programme under the theme, “Revisiting tradition” on December 14 with colors and hornbill feathers making the college campus vibrant and lively.
A press release from UCD stated that, Ekonthung Jami assistant professor of English exhorted on the distinct culture of the Nagas and its importance in saving the identity of the entire community as a whole by relearning what ancestors have given.
Dr Temjenwabang, convenor of research committee announced the completion of two academic works by Unity College; the special edition of the college’s peer reviewed “Journal of humanities and social science” and the “proceedings” of a national seminar. They were released by N.M. Ovung, chairman and Dr. Lichumo Enie, principal of Unity College.
The students presented a Lotha folk song titled “Potsow Ekhungyan (God’s Kingdom)”, Bengali victory dance symbolizing victory over evil, “Jen mong hoi chem” a Phom folk song. Two dances “Ahuna (season of plenty)” of the Sumis and the hornbill dance of the Aos were also presented.
Imlijungla Jamir (BA 6th semester) presented a narrative on Ao traditional attires and its significance. The formal cultural event concluded with a Nepali folk dance. The event also hosted indigenous games and the competition included sports like war cry, cock fight, fire making, greased pole climbing, bamboo stilt race and cart racing.
The evening session was marked by “Unity Voice Hunt”, an annual singing competition celebrated by the college to find the best voice among the students. The judges were Moanungsang, the first Naga Idol winner and Maheukosing Eliem bassist of Papersky and a music teacher at Musika. There were a total of ten participants and the competition saw some new talents. Judge Moanungsang also gave a special performance, “When you love a woman” by Journey, Asuvi Kiho (assistant professor), Marshiba and Jentysangla both winners of Unity Voice Hunt also performed for the college.
Gabriel Pucho of BA 2nd semester was declared the winner of Unity Voice Hunt 2019 followed by a runners up Zareni C Kithan of BA 4th semester. DJ Aloza also featured at the end of the event. The hosts were Shunbana Rahman and Zuben Ngullie.
