
“National science day” (NSD) was observed in Dimapur, Kohima and Tuensang along with the rest of the world on February 28 to commemorate the contribution made by Indian physicist, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman as well as to impart the importance of science and to display activities, efforts and achievements in the field.
MITE: Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) Kohima observed the occasion at the college auditorium with Dr. Kate Dandesh Kumar, associate professor as the speaker under the theme, “women in science”.
A press release from MITE stated that, Dr. Kate Dandesh Kumar talked about the role played by women in science and how many modern women were now active in science in their everyday life. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Zuchano Ovung, invocation by Medovinuo followed by a brief introduction about “national science day” by Pushong. Ecological club members presented a special number and the programme concluded with a prayer by Benjamin.
St John College: St John College observed “national science day” with administrative head, Peter Banks launching the competitions of the day with a message on the significance of scientific applications in daily lives.
A press release from the college stated that, the event began with exhibition from students in the departments of science and humanities. Various prototypes and models showcased were focused on sustainability of energy and reducing pollution in the environment. Some students of Economics department displayed the effective ways of organic farming in “vermicompost” using Ethiopian earthworms. In the field of technological innovations, students from Chemistry department displayed the working model of “li-fi”, a transmission of data using light experiment instead of wi-fi. Apart from advances in technology and management of resources, presentations were also made on health awareness.
Students from department of Zoology displayed the practical effects of alcohol in human body and awareness of medicinal plants commonly available. Literary competitions were also held in the interest of creating awareness about the advantages and disadvantages of scientific discoveries.
Earlier, in the essay competition titled “women in science”, Revina L Mech won the first position and Chonglikhum won the painting competition under the topic “pollution”. Group competitions such as debate and quiz were also held where Srishti, B.SC was adjudged as best speaker in the debate, “scientific development: a boon or doom?” Nikita and Bhargava won the best exhibition with their demonstration on the “effects of alcohol” followed by physics students with their “smart sensor”.
CSUTT: Chang Students’ Union, Tuensang town (CSUTT) in collaboration with district education office, Tuensang, sponsored by government of Nagaland, directorate of Science and Technology organised an essay competition on the theme “Women in science” to mark the day on February 28 at CBLT conference hall, Tuensang. A press release from CSUTT press and publicity secretary, I. Langa Chuba stated that, programme was chaired by Asang, women coordinator CSUTT and Thungtikhumba, president CSUTT, highlighted the importance of national science day and to foster the spirit of advancement and how, the students should come up with innovative ideas to drive society forward. Resource person, Dr. Pritpal Kaur, SDPO Tuensang, stated, “Science as one of the most important subject, a student can learn, because of its relevance and applications in our daily life”. Headmistress of Trininty Academy, Sometnaro disseminated knowledge on topic “Women in science”.
Altogether 47 students from various government and private schools participated in the essay competition. St. John Higher Secondary School was adjudged as the winner and 1st runners up, whereas, Wela Foundation School was declared the 2nd runners up.
Meanwhile, the student’s union acknowledged the district education office (DEO) Tuensang and all the respective school principals and teachers from various schools for extending their valuable support by actively, participating in the event.
