NPMHR urges PM to protect NE people against racism

Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) Delhi, has appealed to prime minister Narendra Modi to take stringent action against any form of racism on people from the North East, anywhere in India especially against the backdrop of ongoing fight against COVID-19.

In the letter, NPMHR convenor Chingri Vashum and co-convenor Guangpuangnag Kahmei also sought protection from eviction and harassment of North East tenants by landlords across India. They also urged PM to set up shelter centres in different cities for stranded people from NE. Further, NPMHR also urged upon PM to provide concessions on all form of rent for NE students, non-working and vulnerable population.

NPMHR plea arose from widespread reported cases of racial profiling, violence and discrimination against the people from north east living and working in different parts of India. It said many cases have gone unreported while rise in cases of racism has evoked fear and insecurity among the community, in addition to the collective fear of coronavirus.
