To provide social security for the construction workers, Nagaland State Legal Service Authority (NSLSA) and Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers’ (NBOCW) Welfare Board organised a special camp for unrecognised sectors at Indira Gandhi Stadium on Wednesday.
Interacting with media persons, project officer department of labour, Chubayanger said the welfare scheme for construction workers scheme was implemented in 2013 and was one of the most vulnerable segments of unorganised labour in India, where Nagaland was no exception.
Considering the vulnerability of their profession and life, Chubayanger said that the state government had constituted NBOCW welfare board for workers in unorganised sectors and expressed joy that NSLSA had joined the venture.
During the four year period, he said there were more than 7,000 people that had benefited and the scheme will continue, provided the beneficiaries have the required documents. PO said construction workers were the main target and village councils were given authority to identify and certify construction workers.
Members’ secretary NSLSA, Nino Iralu said the Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) identified the construction workers by visiting construction sites and after identification of the workers they were certified by a panel of lawyers. She said NSLSA was acting as bridge between construction workers and the nodal department.
Further, Iralu said that NSLSA and NBOCW Welfare Board will reach out to the rest of the district very soon, which will not only benefit the workers but their entire families.
She pointed out that construction workers were not protected by any agency and was confident that honest results will be seen in the future. It may be noted that the programme was organised in collaboration with deputy commissioner’s office and Kohima District Legal Service Authority (KDLSA). Altogether 409 beneficiaries from 49 villages under Kohima district have been registered under NBOCW.
