Ahead of the State elections, the department of excise department Tuesday destroyed seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth around Rs. 10, 53, 600 (market value) at the office premises of directorate of excise and prohibition.
The seizure was made by Excise Mobile squad during the period August 25, 2017 to January 24, 2018, said superintendent of excise and prohibition (MS), Katoho Sumi.
The seized items were 14, 796 bottles of assorted liquor, and in this connection, a 391 persons were arrested 319, Katoho said. He also informed that fine amount deposited was Rs 3, 19, 000.
Speaking in a brief destruction programme, Commissioner of excise, Tarep Imchen lauded the mobile squad for performing their duties diligently.
Imchen also said that the department has 203 constables in Nagaland with very limited weapons and manpower, but mobile squad had achieved the assigned duties. He also called upon the civil societies to come forward and assist the department in the fight against illegal flow of liquor in the state.
Deputy commissioner of excise (NC), Kevisetuo Angami informed that a committee has been set up in the department to investigate the seized items. He said that destruction has been done with the approval of the commissioner. Earlier, the short destruction programme began with an invocation by superintendent of excise Dimapur, Arilong Longkumer.
The destruction programme also witnessed commendation certificates given away to constables, head constables, assistant inspectors and inspector.
