MCCI asks govt to repeal COVID-19 cess

Mon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has extended support to the representation submitted by Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CNCCI) and also requested government of Nagaland to rollback COVID-19 cess on diesel, petrol and motor spirit.

A press release from MCCI president N. Ünok SN and general secretary and administration Kamnyi Konyak stated that, “the COVID-19 cess will compound the economic depression caused by the lockdown, inducing rapid inflation and higher cost of living making way for rise in the numbers of anti-social elements and a soaring crime rate, a real descend into chaos and the rise in the cost of essential commodities, which is already happening, will be the first revelation.”

MCCI stated that the “government is only fretful about its revenue but we are the medium through which the state earns its revenue, we are the lifeblood of the state economy, the market keepers and we know the COVID-19 cess, unless repealed immediately, is going to prove to be disastrous for Nagaland social and economic health.”

While asserting that the business community of Mon district was trying its best to live up to its responsibilities and has been playing active role in all of the sub-division as core member of the District Task Force, the MCCI claimed that hike of fuel prices was nothing more than utter disregard to the plight of common Naga public by the government of Nagaland.
