Longleng District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) conducted a programme on “legal awareness” on March 3 at Yingli College Longleng.
Resource person of the programme were panel lawyers, P. Monyei Phom and M. Chingmei Phom.
During the programme, panel lawyer, P. Monyei Phom, who spoke on Motor Vehicle Act and offences related to it said that the Act was passed in the year 1988 by the Indian Parliament however, it came into force only on July 1, 1989.
She said the Act regulated most aspects concerning road transport vehicles which had provisions for traffic regulations, vehicle insurance, registration of motor vehicles, controlling permits and penalties.
She also said that in order to make roads safer for commuters, the government of India in consultation with the state government came up with new motor vehicles bill and brought up slight changes to Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and was later passed by the Government in 2017.
Phom also said that the new Bill which came into force had various penalties such as traffic violations recall of defective vehicle parts by automobile companies, holding builders accountable for poor quality of infrastructure, making vehicle owners criminally liable for violations committed by juvenile drivers etc.
She therefore, urged upon the participants to keep updated with the Motor Vehicle Act and to follow strict traffic rules.
Meanwhile in the second session, panel lawyer, M. Chingmei Phom who spoke on the topic “cyber crime” emphasised on the development of the internet and its related benefits as well as the punishment for violators under various sections of cyber crime.
He stated that cybercrime was any type of illegal activity that took place via digital means where people intentionally or unintentionally committed crimes with a wide range of malicious activity, such as cyber bullying or planting worms or viruses. He therefore advised all to be aware of its uses and consequences.
Longleng District Legal Services Authority (LDLSA) secretary and chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Ajongba Imchen while exhorting the gathering shared about his experiences with the faculties and students of institution. He also emphasised on the values and rights enshrined in the constitution and encouraged them to be aware of them for their benefit.
He further spoke on the core value of legal services, its importance and benefits especially for the weaker section and marginalised people in a society.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by LDLSA project assistant Hamnyei Angh. Students, faculties and staff of Yingli College participated at the awareness programme.
