
Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC) Samagra Shiksha Tseminyu conducted block level teachers’ training on “foundational literacy and numeracy” from April 29-30 at EBRC hall Tseminyu. The training was organised by district mission authority Samagra Shiksha (DMA SS) Kohima.
A press release by TOT EBRC Tseminyu, Francis Rengma stated that during the inaugural session, DMA SS Kohima assistant district coordinator, Thongsenlo Rengma in his keynote said that “no learner can progress in education without solid foundation on literacy and numeracy at early stages of learning process”.
He lamented that despite various interventions being initiated, the progress report of learners were quite alarming in matters of learning outcomes and report of Pratham. He emphasised that under NEP 2020, the highest priority of the education system would be to achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy in primary school by 2025.
Further, he impressed upon the teachers to re-energise the system through dedication to one’s task.
Area education officer (AEO) under SDEO Tseminyu, Chengeseng Kath shared that teachers underwent many trainings and were well equipped at the same time. However, he queried whether there was any striking balance in the system.
He lamented on students declining enrolment and poor parents opting for alternative schools to send their children to study as a cause of concern.
In this regard, he urged teacher trainees to adopt plans and policies being the real executors to reverse the trend and reiterated on school education’s COVID guidelines and urged them remain at their place of posting.
EBRC Tseminyu resource persons for the training were coordinator Rushulo Khing, TOTs Francis Rengma and Hinilo Cheng with the topics on foundational literacy and numeracy, importance of brain development in early years, phonics/phonetics, sight words, development of vocabulary, skills on reading, speaking and writing; development of pre-number concepts, patterns, geometry, spatial relations, development of number sense and number operations.
Altogether, 40 schools with two specified teachers are participating at the training session.
