
Amid the pandemic, Phom leaders gathered at the Phom day pledge declaration site in Longleng town on Sunday, to observe the 69th Phom Day with Phom People’s Council (PPC) president, M. Shami Angh as special guest, by maintaining all COVID-19 SOPs.
According to DIPR report, the special guest said that Phom Day was celebrated because of their forefathers, who had made “a wise decision to stop headhunting and choose peace for growth and development”.
Thus, he said, through the peace the forefathers obtained for them, they could live in peace and harmony today.
He maintained that in order to treasure this “Peace Day”, loving the neighboring villages and caring for one another became a responsibility.
In order to bring change and progress on Phom soil through peace, Shami Angh also called upon the young educated Phoms to come forward with dedication and love in order to lead the Phom society.
The PPC president pointed out that in the past during the forefathers’ time, they considered human races as rival enemies, but today they were faced with serious challenge of pandemic where COVID-19 had become a threat to the entire human races.
Therefore, the president appealed to all to save humanity by standing together with a responsibility by following all safety protocols.
He said that on the occasion, PPC saluted and stood together in prayer with all the health workers, frontline workers and people who were tirelessly shouldering the responsibility in the state.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by general secretary former executive secretary PBCA, Tenau Phom.
It may be mentioned that Phom Day was born on June 6, 1952 under the leadership of late Hamnyei, late Yongtau and Phom intellectual leaders from different villages.
On this day, they took a pledge to stop headhunting, killing and attacking rival villages.
This day marks the ending of head hunting era and the beginning of a new dawn in Phom land.
