Kohima, Dimapur observe ‘World blood donor day’

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, people in Kohima and Dimapur played key roles in ensuring a safe blood supply on “World Blood Donor Day”, which is observed on June 14 every year. The aim is to raise awareness of the need for safe blood for transfusion and of its critical contribution.

Kohima: A voluntary blood donation campaign was organised to mark World Blood Donor Day at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), here, on Monday.

The campaign was organised by Voluntary Blood Donors Association Kohima (VBDAK) in collaboration with Assam Rifles Kohima battalion, supported by Blood Bank, NHAK.

The campaign would culminate on Saturday, during which voluntary donors in and around Kohima including school students would be expected to participate.

On Monday, a total of 12 individuals came forward and donated blood, which would be stored at the blood bank for later use.

VDBAK president Bendang Imsong said they were hopeful that more volunteers would come forward in the next few days.

He also said people were still sceptical about donating blood and therefore the association was trying to help encourage potential donors to come forward as there was no risk for a healthy person to donate their blood in a controlled environment with the help of medical experts.

He added that the group had been supporting by arranging donors for some patients at the hospital who were in dire need of blood. The group is also spreading news about the campaign through social media, Imsong added.

Donors were handed out certificates, badges and were provided with refreshment. (Correspondent)
