PRA exercise on ODF+ in Longleng

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercise on Open Defecation Free (ODF) plus goals was conducted at Shamnyuching village under Tamlu sub-division, here, on Saturday.

The programme was organised by Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Longleng division and sponsored by Sanitation & Water and Sanitation Support Organisation (WSSO) PHED Kohima.

Resource person of the programme district coordinator, Sumachiba Walling while emphasising on the topic said the PRA exercise was taken up to ascertain the current status of ODF sustainability and solid and liquid waste management in the village and focused on capturing the key ODF plus indicators and community assets in the village. 

Walling also highlighted the key component of ODF plus goals and encouraged participants to continue their active participation and involvement for an open defecation free plus village. 

Meanwhile, Information Education Communication (IEC) consultant, Davom Phom spoke on the importance of waste management and recycling. 

She emphasised on basic principles of waste management, the 5Rs- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover and Refuse. She urged the participants to recognise the harmful impacts of waste to environment & health and to take corrective measures to keep the village clean through proper solid & liquid waste management practice. 

In the second session, strategies and key elements to achieve ODF plus status were discussed with villagers to create a clean sustainable environment through proper solid and liquid waste management. 

The programme was attended by council members, WATSAN members, VDBs, women representatives, Church leaders and Swachhagrahis.
