Members of Kohima Press Club (KPC) on Saturday carried out a clean-up drive at the club’s plot in New Secretariat area, Kohima, on Saturday, reiterating their demand for a permanent building for the press body.
As the club prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary in January 2026, concerns remain over the lack of a dedicated space for journalists in the state capital.
KPC stated that during a press conference on February 27, 2024, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced that the construction of a permanent KPC building would be completed within a year. However, one year and three months later, the project has yet to begin, leaving Nagaland’s oldest press club without a foundation.
KPC founding member and advisor Kopelo Krome, who participated in the clean-up drive, pointed out that press clubs in other states enjoy government-backed facilities, while KPC continues to operate without a designated space, despite its 24 years of existence. Echoing this concern, KPC president Alice Yhoshü, said that the club has neither a permanent nor a temporary government-allotted building, currently functioning out of a rented space in the APO Building.
She emphasized that journalists in Nagaland are among the lowest-paid employees in the private sector, relying on membership contributions to sustain operations. Due to financial constraints, KPC has urged the state government for assistance in constructing an office. She also pointed out that press clubs in neighboring states receive government support, making similar provisions necessary in Nagaland.
Since its formation 24 years ago, KPC has grown into a vibrant organization with over 60 members. With the growing press fraternity, there is an increasing need for a Media Centre in Kohima, which could also serve visiting journalists from other districts and states.
Referencing the Chief Minister’s assurance, Yhoshü expressed hope that the government will honor its commitment. Regardless of the circumstances, she reaffirmed that the May 14 anniversary committee resolution stands, and KPC will proceed with its 25th anniversary celebrations at the club’s plot—“with or without a roof over our heads.”
