
Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has been conducting Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercises on Open Defecation Free (ODF) plus in villages across the state. The PRA exercise is aimed at ODF sustainability and Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) which focusses on comprehensive cleanliness in villages.
Mokokchung: PRA exercise on ODF plus was conducted at Mopungchuket village under Kubolong block and Chuchuyimpang, Longmisa and Settsu villages under Ongpangkong north block from August 6-9.
In a press release, PHED Mokokchung division informed that the programme was organised by DWSM PHED Mokokchung division and sponsored by sanitation & WSSO PHED.
During the exercise, SDO PHED Mokokchung, Imtiyanger T Imchen spoke on the objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) which he said was based on community approach towards water.
He informed that it envisaged water supply to every rural household through Functional Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024. In this regard, he encouraged the community to contribute 5% to the mission through community participation as per JJM guidelines.
Sanitation & hygiene consultant, DWSM, Tsungrusungla Jamir spoke on solid and liquid waste management and also stressed on the importance of 4 Rs- reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle.
Meanwhile, district coordinator cum chemist, Alemjungla Longchar spoke on the importance of Field-Testing Kits (FTK) and its usage and testing the quality of water through FTKs.
The PRA exercise was attended by village council members, WATSAN committee members, Swachhagrahis and Anganwadi workers.
Kiphire: A four-day PRA exercise under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Phase II on Open Defecation Free (ODF) plus sustainability conducted by PHED Kiphire division culminated on Thursday.
In a press release, the department informed that the exercise sponsored by Sanitation and WSSO, PHED Nagaland was conducted in four villages which included Langzanger, Tetheyu, Insakiur and Longmatra villages.
The PRA exercises were undertaken with an objective to collect data, identify resources, and to find remedy with respect to issue related to sanitation and water supply, and to serve as a reference to ease community envisioning and action planning to improvise their lifestyle and environment.
The PRA team consisted of district coordinator cum chemist, IEC consultant, sanitation and hygiene consultant and a member from implementing support agency (Akehda Amulung).
During the exercises, IEC consultant, Tsarila L Sangtam spoke on role of swachhagrahis and WATSAN committee and apprised them to encourage the spirit of cleanliness and sanitation in their respective villages.
Sanitation and hygiene consultant, Limatemsu also highlighted on ODF Plus activities and elaborated on methods and steps involve in tackling solid and liquid waste management.
He further advised the participants to adopt and adapt the mantra of 4Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) in managing waste in their respective vicinity.
District co-ordinator cum chemist, Horili Sangtam stressed on ODF plus sustainability and encouraged the participants to focus on sustenance and maintenance of the resources. He also conducted FTK training for swachhagrahis and five women on water quality monitoring & surveillance.
The appraisal consisted of village profile, water supply, sanitation and usage of toilet and the status of open defecation free plus.
The exercise was attended by WATSAN committee, village councils, anganwadi workers, village education committee, SHGs, NGOs and Church members.
