PMGSY schemes highlighted at ‘district rural roads seminar’

Along with the rest of the country, Nagaland also observed “District Rural Road Seminar” on August 15. The road seminar was part of “Bharat Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” and will be celebrated from August 15 to 22 in all the district headquarters. 

At the seminar, implementation of the project under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) schemes and achievements were highlighted. 

According to DIPR report, in Peren, the seminar was graced by advisor of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Women Resources Development, R. Khing as special guest.

Speaking at the programme, Khing said that PMGSY was launched on December 25, 2000, with the primary objective to provide connectivity, by way of an all-weather road (with necessary culverts and cross-drainage structures, which is operable throughout the year), to the eligible unconnected habitations in the rural areas with a population of 500+ in plain areas, 250+ in North-Eastern and Himalayan States and 100+ in the critical Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected blocks (as identified by MHA)as per Census,2001, so that people in the rural area have access to basic health services, education and market for their produce. He also said that Government of India has subsequently launched new interventions/verticals namely PMGSY-II for upgradation of 50,000 km of road length, road connectivity project for Left Wing Extremism Affected Areas (RCPLWEA) for construction/upgradation of strategically important roads and PMGSY-III for consolidation of 1,25,000 km of through routes and major rural links connecting habitations,  inter-alia, to Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), Higher Secondary Schools and Hospitals. The implementation period of PMGSY-III is till March, 2025. The advisor further called for active cooperation and participation from the district administration as well as stakeholder in the remaining activities which he said will play a key role to the success of this year long programme.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by EE, PWD (R&B), Peren Division, Dr. Khuito Murumi and technical paper presentation on the topics “Use of new technology in rural road construction, Implementation of PMGSY-III Scheme and Role of PMGSY in development of respective rural areas” by SDO, PWD(R&B), Peren Sub-Division, Er. Asembe Mbungcha.

In Lonleng, NLA Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer Speaker NLA accompanied by advisor Higher and Technical Education and Election, MedoYhokha graced the programme.

Longkumer asserted that technical paper presented by the resource persons was an eye opener and he was pleased to know that new technologies were implemented in the state. He was optimistic that adoption of new technologies will improve the quality of the rural roads in the state and added that engineers in the field have a major role to play in achieving this objective.

He also said that he was extremely encouraged by the participation of all the stakeholders and further sought their cooperation and support in all the projects undertaken by the Government. 

He also highlighted on the implementation of the scheme in the state. 

Earlier, the resource person Er. S.B.Angh, EE PWD (R&B) Longleng division spoke on “Use of new technology in rural road construction” while JE, H. Baukup Phom spoke on “Implementation of PMGSY -III Scheme” and JE,  H. Lakphak Phom on “Role of PMGSY in development of respective rural areas”.
