ASHAs trained on ‘paediatric care in COVID-19’

Anticipating COVID-19 third wave which supposedly would hit children the most, state Heath and Family Welfare (H&FW) has begun training of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) on “paediatric care in COVID-19” across Nagaland.

During the training, ASHAs were trained on the danger signs, surveillance, signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in paediatric age group, prevailing myths conception of COVID-19 in children.  

Kohima: Training for urban ASHAs on paediatric care in COVID-19 was conducted on August 26 at Viswema Community Health Centre (CHC) by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kohima office along with District Health Society (DHS), National Health Mission (NHM), department of H&FW.

A press release by CMO Kohima office stated that the resource persons for the training were MO (paediatrician) Dr. Akatoli Angto and MO Chiephobozou CHC Dr. Kekhrieneizo Peseyie. During the training, Dr. Kevilhoulie informed the ASHAs on the importance of malaria slide test and pointed out the differences of SARI/ILI reporting system. 

MO Jakhama PHC Dr. Asano Sophie gave demonstration on how to handle Covid-19 related cases in children and briefed the ASHAs on the paediatric care relating the approach of Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood illness (IMNCI). She also highlighted on the major components on the preparedness and management of any sudden surge of COVID-19 care. DSO, Medical officer, BPM & Block Asha Co-ordinator attended the training. Earlier, training on “paediatric care on COVID-19” was also organised for Kohima district rural ASHAs on August 25 at Kohima village primary health centre by CMO Kohima office along with DHS NHM.

Resource person medical officer (MO) Kohima Village PHC Dr. Medotseio Whourie gave demonstration on how to handle COVID-19 related cases in children. 

Dr. Medotseio briefed the ASHAs on the paediatric care relating the approach of IMNCI as vital objectives of the training inculcates the importance of paediatric care in COVID-19 age group. He also highlighted on the major components on the preparedness and management of any sudden surge of COVID-19 care. 

ASHAs were also trained on the danger signs, surveillance, signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in paediatric age group, prevailing myths conception of COVID-19 in children and on the roles and responsibilities in the ward, colonies and community.

Dr. Medotseio also stressed on the importance of Malaria slide test, pointed out the differences of SARI/ILI reporting system. 

The training was attended by DPM, DMO, BPM and block ASHA coordinator.

Tuensang: One day training on paediatric care in COVID-19 for ASHAs in Tuensang district was conducted for NUHM and Tuensang Sadar ASHAs on August 25-26 at DPMU Office Tuensang. In Noksen, Longkhim and Shamator blocks the training was conducted in their respective block on August 26.

A press release by CMO Tuensang stated that the major component of the training was for preparedness and management of neonates on COVID-19. 

The district trainers include community health officer (CHO), MOs, district community mobilizer (DCM) and block ASHA coordinators (BACs).

Shamator: Training on “paediatric care on new born children (neo nates) COVID-19 cum monthly block ASHA meeting” was held at Medical Office Community Health Centre (CHC) Shamator.
