Nagaland University celebrates 28th foundation day

Nagaland University (NU) celebrated its 28th foundation day on September 6 at its headquarters Lumami. The programme was chaired by assistant professor, department of anthropology Dr. Maibam Radharani Devi.

In a press release, NU PRO, Peter Ki informed that while speaking at the programme, vice-chancellor, professor P. Lal pointed out that the foundation stone of the university was laid by late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on October 5, 1987 and the university was ultimately set up on September 6, 1994.

He added that on September 6, 1997, seven academic departments were inaugurated in Lumami by late Hokishe Sema. While appreciating the minds that contributed to the growth of the university, Prof. Lal asserted that a clear vision was required to take the university forward.

He said the biggest strength of the university in its quest for qualitative change in the system was the manpower and young body with experienced minds.

Stating that no one lost the zeal in making the university’s presence felt in the national scenario, he exhorted the staff of the lone central university to hold the torch to show light for other institutions in providing service to society.

Maintaining that the importance of specialising knowledge continued, Prof. Lal said it was also important to integrate specialisation into sectors with ultimate motive of growing.

He said it was high time to take care of the system, and to thus take care of society.

Taking pride in the glorious past, he believed that the university would succeed in creating a new academic history in quality teaching, research, and development activities.

He also urged stakeholders to show love and belonging to the system, come together, shoulder responsibility, and lend a big helping hand to the institution.

A short speech was delivered by professor department of political science, A.K. Singh where he pointed out that the university had risen quantitatively and qualitatively by converting challenges into opportunities. Along with “a magnificent increase in the number of departments and staff members,” the university today is managed by people from inside, a vision for which Nagaland University was established, he added.

Flag hoisting by Prof. P. Lal was followed by singing of university song. Research scholars Thejano Ngully and Supongtoshi also presented a song on the occasion.

Earlier, vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Likhase Sangtam while the national anthem was led by students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, NU, Lumami.
