
AH&VS TO SET UP QUALITY CONTROL LAB TO TEST MEAT SAMPLES
Nagaland Pig Farmers Association (NPFA) organised an “awareness seminar on the current scenario on piggery sector in Nagaland” at NPFA office, here, on Friday.
Speaking at the programme as resource person, Dimapur district veterinary hospital in-charge, Dr. KN Zubemo Humtsoe highlighted on the prospects and challenges of poultry in Nagaland.
Dr. Zubemo said that as per animal husbandry and veterinary service department survey report of 2009 to 2010, Nagaland spent around Rs. 221.92 crore on import of meat.
Therefore, he said, meat business had a lot of potential in Nagaland as every part of the animal was consumed and nothing went to waste.
However, Dr. Zubemo said besides all the opportunities and scope in meat business, there were many constraints.
He informed that Nagaland lacked in quality germplasm as most of pigs were nondescript.
In this regard, he advised the participants to breed indigenous pigs such as Suho pigs which had very strong disease resistance compared to exotic breed.
Highlighting the public health significant, Dr. Zubemo disclosed that the department would be setting up quality control lab where meat samples would be tested to see if they were suitable for consumption.
He also focused on the importance of vaccination and encouraged the farmers to concentrate on feed production.
Meanwhile, resource person VAS Dr. Bocto Sumi carried out the technical session where he highlighted on awareness of African Swine Fever (ASF).
Pamphlets on ASF, vaccination, deworming schedule in domestic animals and birds, and care management of piglets were also distributed.
Earlier, NPFA president rev. N Subong Aier informed that the association was inducted in 2018 and existed in various districts in the state.
He informed that in Dimapur, there were about 44 registered piggery farmers.
The programme was attended by beneficiaries from Dimapur and was followed by an interactive session. Later, vote of thanks was delivered by NPFA secretary Achum Ngu.
