National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland state unit has suggested bifurcation of administrative set up of Dimapur district into Dimapur rural (ADC) and Dimapur urban (DC) if the state government cannot forego its order. In a statement, NPP state unit suggested that the present DC office at Dimapur town be retained as the headquarters of Dimapur urban since Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) administration was also located within town area.
NPP has, however, slammed the state government for turning a deaf ear to numerous demands and requests by the civil society organisations (CSOs) to not shift the present DC headquarters. “This only proves that the present state government is not a populist but a police government,” the party said and accused the state government was becoming “autocratic and utterly biased in favour of a particular tribe and section of people.” Further, questioning the government’s “illogical approach of administering the Dimapur municipality from a far-flung village area”, the NPP said the move would cause untold miseries to the citizens of the Dimapur town area. The party stated that people residing in the town area and other nearby sub-divisions would have to traverse immense distances for all kinds of official works on a daily basis. In this regard, NPP unit has urged “all right thinking citizens to condemn and protest against such dictatorial moves by the state government.”
It also demanded that the state government “immediately take serious cognition” about the shifting the DC headquarters to Chumukedima to avoid untoward situation in the near future. NPP maintained that it believed in a peaceful resolution to the fiasco and did not condone any use of violent or aggressive methods. The party, however, said that through democratic and peaceful measures “we can unitedly stand against the autocracy of the state government.”
