SASRD NU conducts farmers training

With the objective of promoting onion and garlic cultivation among tribal farmers, Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) on onion and NEH component for onion & garlic, SASRD Nagaland University (NU) conducted farmers training on “promotion of onion & garlic cultivation” at SASRD, NU, Medziphema campus on December 6.

In a press release, SASRD informed that director ICAR- directorate of onion and garlic research, Pune, Dr. Major Singh encouraged farmers by highlighting importance and prospects of onion cultivation in Nagaland and also stated that whole sale price of onion in Nagaland was the highest in India. 

After the inaugural function, technical session-I on “promotion of onion cultivation” was delivered by principle scientist and nodal officer NEH component for onion & garlic, Dr. Vijay Mahajan while technical session-II on “guava cultivation” was delivered by assistant professor, department of horticulture, SASRD, NU, Dr A. Sarkar. 

The training was attended by 80 farmer participants from Medziphema, Hekheshe and New Socüünoma with the aim to promote onion cultivation which would automatically mend requirements of local people and act as a source of income. 

During the discussion hour, farmers shared their problems where subject experts provided helpful suggestions. 

Planting materials consisting of four guava varieties, organic inputs such as neem oil, biofertilisers and watering cane were also distributed to all participants.
