Vaccine crucial to prevent hospitalizations and deaths: H&FW

With the new Covid variant– Omicron spreading rapidly around the world, putting a strain on the health system, State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department has once again reminded that Covid-19 vaccination was crucial to prevent hospitalizations and deaths as vaccines were very effective against circulating variants like Delta and expected to be effective against severe disease and deaths by Omicron.

In its weekly bulletin, the health department cautioned that though the festive season brings in much cheer and joy, it comes with an increased risk of infections and super spreader events due to more interactions between people unless all citizens of the state come together and do their part.

Besides emphasising on getting inoculated against Covid-19, it also stressed on the need wear mask in public places. 

H&FW also said that crowd control in any social, religious, or political gathering were crucial to avoid super spreader events.

Meanwhile, the state reported 19 new cases from the week (December 11-17) while the weekly sample positivity rate stood at 0.5%.  Five new hospital admissions and two deaths were reported during the week.

State logs 4 fresh cases: Nagaland on Saturday recorded four fresh Covid-19 positive cases while no deaths were reported during the day.

Of the fresh cases, two were from Mokokchung and one each in Dimapur and Kohima taking the total caseload to 32169.

AS on December 18, a total of 1328268 persons were administered vaccine doses (757196 first dose and  571072 second dose) 

PTI: India logged 7,145 new cases taking the total tally to 3,47,33,194, while the death toll climbed to 4,77,158 with 289 more fatalities.
