Awareness programme on health and hygiene

North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) conducted an awareness programme on “women health, personal hygiene and sanitation” at Sendenyu village council hall under Tseminyu block, Kohima district, on October 23. 

Speaking at the first session of the programme on “women health”, senior treatment supervisor ICMR-NIE IHCI, Rhokuotho stressed on the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, importance of exercise, menstrual health and hygiene.

While speaking on hypertension, Rhokuotho urged the gathering to go for regular checkups and follow ups as hypertension was “a silent killer”.

In the second session, ICMR-NIE, IHCI intern, Ketsinuo spoke on the importance of personal hygiene where she stressed on taking care of one’s own body.

Delivering a talk on “sanitation” in the third session, CHO, Sendenyu village, Tsujivi Semy emphasised on safe drinking water, good sanitation practices and safe disposal of human waste and management of solid waste to prevent or control vector borne diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, typhoid and cholera.

She also encouraged the villagers to eradicate open air defecation and said that in order to ensure hygienic living it was necessary to have a proper toilet, maintain personal and community hygiene.

Earlier, introduction about the programme was given by project associate NEIDA Nokman Konyak. Sanitary pads, dustbin, soap and medicines were also distributed to around 50 participants.

It may be mentioned that the programme is a part of Tribal Development Fund (TDF) funded by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) which covers three villages Sendenyu, New Sendenyu and Thongsunyu.
