Shamator dist demand: YTC temporarily suspends stir

Superseding its January 2 notification, the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) has temporarily suspended the first pahse of public agitation demanding immediate declaration of Shamator as a district till further notice.

Informing this in a notification, YTC executive chairman Y. Makezho also said that the Likimro Hydroelectric Power Plant operation can resume and have allowed entry of visitors to Mt. Saramati, Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, stone caves at Salomi and Mimi.

YTC therefore informed all the administrative headquarters under YTC for immediate compliance. It, however, cautioned that if the state government failed to fulfil its assurance at the earliest, YTC would resume democratic agitation till justice was delivered.

The announcement comes a day after the state cabinet on January 7, decided to constitute a “third party committee” to negotiate/consult with the tribal bodies of the area with regard to the demand for Shamator district creation.

Meanwhile, the sixth day of agitation on Saturday witnessed a total bandh in all the administrative headquarters under Yimkhiung Tribal Council jurisdiction, a DIPR report stated.
