To mark World Environment Day, the Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) in collaboration with Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) carried out a district-wide cleanliness and tree plantation drive, engaging over 5,000 people, including youths, students, elders, and community leaders.
The campaign began at Clock Tower, Phek Town, with Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori emphasizing the need to combat plastic pollution and urging people to practice plastic segregation and waste reduction year-round.
CYF president Kevesa Khama highlighted the global call to action under this year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” while thanking local organizations for their support. Short speeches were delivered by CPO general secretary Chepetso Kozo, Phek Town Council chairperson Shevohu Nienu, and other leaders.
A pledge to “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” plastic waste was taken by 400 participants during the kickoff event. As part of The Himalayan Campaign (THC), waste segregation, auditing, and branding were conducted within a 500-meter radius, identifying major plastic pollutants from brands like Perfetti van Melle India Ltd, Som Silver Supari Pvt. Ltd., and Pepsico.
Throughout Phek district, activities included clean-up drives, tree planting, waste segregation, and nurturing previously planted trees. The CYF and CPO also visited multiple locations to oversee the initiatives. To recognize outstanding efforts, an Award for Best Performing Unit will soon be presented for innovative waste management and conservation initiatives after collecting reports from participating units, CYF informed.
