Lower Agri Youth Organisation (LAYO) in collaboration with Urban Primary Health Centre, Porterlane (UPHC), Kohima organised a free health camp, here on Saturday.
The camp was conducted at Lower Agri Panchayat where two doctors and eight staff from UPHC attended the camp.
Interacting with the media, LAYO president Abel Assumi said the youth were preparing for their upcoming silver jubilee on June 1 and in this regard, Abel informed the camp was a precursor to the celebration.
He said that the youth wanted to give back to the society and make sure that all the colony members were medically fit and healthy in the run up to the jubilee.
Observing that there was a common practice in the Naga society where people only took and did not give back, he said LAYO wanted to “break that stereotype” and give back to the society in the least of ways it could.
Sharing his observation on the changes that took place with the colony, Abel said it had become comparatively peaceful with little to no law and order situation in recent times.
He pointed out that the colony was infamously tagged as one of the most notorious colonies in Kohima in the past with a high number of illegal and immoral activities.
He, however said this had changed through the prayers of the mothers.
LAYO president also disclosed that the rise in tenancy within the colony in recent times was a notable indication of the improvement in overall living condition in the colony.
He said the youth were working to declare the colony, a tobacco free and had openly banned all tobacco products.
Abel said there were around 450 youths in the colony according to the latest census conducted within the colony.
Various services provided during the camp included, free consultation, family planning, COVID vaccination, free immunisation, lab test & Non-communicable Diseases (NCD) screening and free medicines.
Some of the activities LAYO has planned in the near future include whitewashing of walls, painting of caricatures to create awareness on social issues etc.
Altogether, 86 patients availed various facilities at the camp. The patients mostly consisted of the age group 20-60 years.
Oldest patient at the camp was an 85-year-old lady.
The most common treatment were general check-up and hypertension. COVID vaccination was also administered to nine persons.
