RGU appeals for releasing relief fund to victims of Mokokchung fire

DIMAPUR

The Readymade Garments’ Union (RGU), Mokokchung has appealed for releasing funds to victims of the fire incident that took place on February 3, 2024, besides rebuilding the shops/buildings destroyed in the fire.
RGU president Sakunukshi and secretary Temsutola in a memorandum to Mokokchung deputy commissioner (DC) reminded that him that a devastating fire raged through the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) shopping complex on February 3, 2024, destroying properties worth several lakhs of rupees and affecting many shop owners, particularly traders and retailers of readymade garments.
They claimed that the fire affected the only source of income for the victims, and were yet to recover financially and personally even after a lapse of more than a year.
They said the traders were yet to receive any response from the state government to date despite having written through proper channel to the chief minister on August 16, 2024, requesting release of relief funds to the affected traders/families.
They stated that the traders/fire victims who had invested all their resources in their business were left high and dry after the fire, and were going through extreme hardships trying to make ends meet with no hope in sight.
Hence, the union leaders said, after thorough discussion with the victims and understanding the hardships faced by fellow traders, they decided to once again approach the state government to consider the plight of the victims and extend a relief fund at the earliest possible time.
Pointing out that the problems being faced by the traders/victims could be called a humanitarian crisis, as the victims had no one to turn to for addressing and resolving their distress, they also urged the government to urgently rebuild the shops at the MMC shopping complex destroyed by the fire in order to restore the source of livelihood of the traders.
They hoped that the government would release the building fund to rebuild the shops without anymore delay.
As the DC of Mokokchung, they requested him to consider the issue with utmost importance and expedite ways and means to compensate the victims.
They said they strongly believed that he would do everything in his power to ensure justice and fair treatment, adding that his action towards their just appeal would be highly appreciated.
