DE&S releases first ever gender statistics of the state

Commissioner and secretary department of Economics and Statistics, Himato Zhimomi released the first “gender statistics Nagaland 2016” published by the department of Economics and Statistics (DE&S) at conference hall DE&S on Monday. 
Himato in his address said the data information provided by the department was very important for the state as it acted like a backbone of the human being. He said the economic and statistics data of various fields allowed the government and policy makers to plan for the present and future of the state. He stressed the need of providing accurate and right input of the data for effective and proper planning by the concern department. He urged the department to study and suggest some corrective measures. 
OSD planning and co-ordination department Kevileno Angami highligted the gist on gender statistics and said that the need of gender statistics has increased on account of the efforts of the government over the years. She said that it was also by demand of various international agencies to bring gender parity and equity between men and women through the initiative like “gender empowerment policies”. She said the publication also focused on the socio-economic status of women, violence against women, political participation of women, status in the labour force, employment, health and education sectors to underscore the outcome of women specific programmes to bring them at par with men.
She said the book also highligted the impact of government intervention programmes specific to men and women, to enable policy makers and planners to formulate suitable evidence based on equitable plans and gender sensitive programmes. Angami opined that the book would serve as a consolidated reference for policy makers, institutions and persons seeking information on gender statistics and would contribute to accelerating the progress towards achieving gender equity.  Director of Economics and Statistics, Y. Sacheo Ovung who chaired the programme said the gender statistics would be helpful for implementation of appropriate policies for the benefit and advancement of women in the state. He said the publication focuses on eight major areas like women’s status in Nagaland which included population, health, social obstacles in women’s empowerment, leadership, women participation in economic activities, labour force, employment, literacy and education. He said such publication was first of kind in the North East.
