Various educational institutions, forest division and organisations commemorated “World Environment Day” (WED) on June 3, by conducting plantation and cleanliness drives in their vicinities.
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise environmental awareness and engage governments, businesses, civil society, institutions and communities to be drivers of change. This year’s theme “only one earth” focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature and calls for collective action to protect and restore the planet.
Kohima: In view of the upcoming World Environment Day, ECO Club of Government Middle School, Forest Colony, Kohima carried out a plantation drive where 60 saplings of different varieties contributed by range office (Silviculture), Kohima division and other flowering plants contributed by various individuals.
Members of the Eco Club along with teachers and students took part in the drive to protect and preserve the environment in and around the school premises.
Tuensang: Tuensang Forest Division on June 3 hosted a flag-off programme where various saplings were planted.
In a press release, the division informed that during the programme, special guest Toyang Changkong Chang, MLA highlighted laws which were enacted to protect and conserve forest areas and wildlife. He also advised the public to use natural resources sustainably.
The programme was followed by distribution of saplings and saw active participation from various educational institutions, government departments, student bodies, churches, village councils, etc.
Kiphire: Staff of the chief medical officer (CMO) and medical superintendent, District Hospital Kiphire conducted a tree plantation drive in the hospital compound where 250 saplings were planted in collaboration with Kiphire Forest Division and hospital ward.
In a press release, chief medical officer (CMO) office media cell informed that during the inaugural function, DFO Chisayi acknowledged the staff for coming forward to create a healthy environment.
He encouraged the people to conserve and preserve the environment.
Meanwhile, DPO(RCH/UIP), Kiphire Dr K Pewezo Khalo highlighted the importance of a healthy environment and good health with special focus on emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases.
He appealed to the staff and public to take the full ownership of trees and encouraged them for more plantation in future.
Medziphema: Medziphema sub-division marked World Environment Day through plantation drive in the office of the ADC.
According to a DIPR report, ADC Medziphema Imsongmeren in his keynote address explained the formation of the Plantation Drive Committee. He also highlighted the plans of plantation drive, protection and preservation of trees and requested the gathering to plant more trees and propagate the message of saving the earth.
Meanwhile, pro vice-chancellor NU, SASRD, professor Dr. Alemla explained the importance of celebrating the day, how to protect, pressure and safeguard mother earth.
She also briefed on the hazards of using plastic and urged upon the public to impart knowledge on the importance of restoring and reforming the earth.
Later, a demonstration plot was created in the indoor stadium where 36 trees were planted by CIH department headed by Arvind Singh, technical consultant, CIH.
The programme ended with plantation drive from all departments planting trees each alongside the ADC office and departmental office complex under Medziphema sub-division.
Around 500 trees were provided by the Environment, Forests & Climate Change department.
KLC: Kohima Law College (KLC) organised a social work on town beautification by putting up flower pots along Kohima main town stretch.
In a press release, KLC media cell informed that assistant professor Kezhokhoto Savi in his keynote address stated that the college launched a month-long observance of WED on May 6 stressing to encourage people to be more aware of the environment.
Savi also stressed on environment protection, air & plastic pollution, sustainable consumption, and food security, among others.
Immanuel College: Eco Club of Immanuel College carried out various activities to mark WED at the college campus from June 1-3.
In a press release, IC media cell informed that on day one and two, the club conducted poster-making and video messages conveying general awareness of the environment.
On the third day, sapling distribution and cleanliness drives were carried out. Various saplings were also distributed in and around the neighbourhood.
